SCREENING ROOMS

SCREENING ROOMS, our new artist film programme, offers a space to imagine new futures through film and retell histories through the lens of Global Majority artists. In conjunction with our exhibitions programme and our wider engagement activity, we’ll be exploring themes such as family, community, and ecology to celebrate the stories of Global Majority communities and bring new film to the city.

SCREENING ROOMS will run from January to March 2025 and is curated in partnership with The New Black Film Collective to support new and established voices in Black-led film. The first film to be screened as part of the programme will be We gather and dream of new congregations by Alberta Whittle on Thursday 9 January. The screening is subtitled in English and will be followed by a talk between racial activist and group facilitator Stella Munthali and artist Glynis Neslen.

Marianne Lewsley-Stier, Artistic Director and Chief Executive at Humber Street Gallery, said: “We’re delighted to have secured this funding. Film has always been popular with our audiences when we have screened work in the past it has always sparked debate and discussion. This funding will allow us to pilot this new programme that we hope will flourish at the venue.

“Humber Street Gallery is a supportive space where culture, identity, and stories are celebrated and told. Acknowledging the rich history of Global Majority people in Hull through music, fashion, art, and activism, we believe in the radical and transgressive power of film to tell those stories.”

The New Black Film Collective was incorporated in 2013 to create and cultivate a vibrant Black ecosystem in the UK screen industries. They champion Black-led film production, distribution, and exhibition and work to preserve Black filmmaking and television. By partnering with allies and progressive organisations, The New Black Film Collective strives to ensure opportunities for Black creatives are available, accessible and equitable.

SCREENING ROOMS is funded by BFI Film Hub North through their Film Exhibition Fund. The Hub is supported by National Lottery funding as part of the BFI Film Audience Network and BFI NETWORK.

The New Black Film Collective is a nationwide network of producers, educators and programmers of Black representation on screen. We use film for not just entertainment purposes but as a tool for social impact and transformative change.
